As the summer sun sets behind us and winter soon approaching, many people begin to visit tanning salons. Tanning salons are considered a quick, easy way to get a tan; but that’s not all they are capable of. The usage of tanning beds may cause dry, itchy skin, and premature aging including wrinkles; they are known to age skin more rapidly. If that isn’t scary enough, tanning beds can increase the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Melanoma can spread not only to the organs, but bones as well. It causes dangers to both the skin and the eyes, damaging the retina, and even burning the cornea. Tanning bed users are more likely to develop basal call carcinoma on top of squamous cell carcinoma, which stays on the skin forever.
Tanning beds pose dangers to everyone, especially teenagers. Since the teenage body is still developing, it is more susceptible to the risks of tanning. Many teens and college students are regulars at the salons, and are unaware of the hidden dangers. Researchers have found that the younger one begins tanning, the more likely they will be to develop skin cancer in the future.
There are two kinds of ultraviolet rays that both the sun and tanning beds release; ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B. Although spending a day in the sun can be harmful, spending 10 minutes in a tanning bed is worse. The skin is being exposed to these damaging rays at stronger levels.
With more than 1 million Americans visiting tanning salons daily, skin cancer is becoming more prevalent. Being tan is said to build self confidence, but in the long run, visits to the tanning salon can be detrimental to the body. Use sun protection daily with our SPF30 UVA/UVB Vitamin C Sunscreen.

Everyone has stress at some point in their lives; some have it more than others. There are many causes of stress including financial struggles, working long hours, and the daily routines of life. It can negatively impact one’s body, including how your skin ages. We can tell how a person is feeling by looking at their face and by the same token see how well they are aging. Depending on how stressed out you are can determine how rapidly you show signs of aging. It is essential for everyone to have a relaxation plan and when it comes to skincare, there are several steps you can take to keep your skin looking fresh.
A mature person who properly takes care of their skin can noticeably reduce the signs of aging. So it is worth taking the time to develop a skin care regiment that could possibly knockoff a few years and help you look and feel younger. Getting regular facials help your skin look and feel refreshed. Moreover, it helps you recapture your youthful flair and vibrancy. Facials improve skin texture, tone, appearance, and more importantly they make you feel good. A facial peel is another procedure that can result in healthier skin. It removes the top layer of dermal tissue, allowing a new layer of skin with fewer age spots and wrinkles.
A procedure, commonly known as the “lunchtime peel”, is microdermabrasion.
This exfoliates and gently resurfaces the skin, giving way to clearer, smoother skin. In addition, it stimulates the growth of new skin cells, and improves skin texture. This procedure is done fairly quickly and can have a lasting effect on how you look and feel.
Relaxation plays an important part in stress management… obvious opposites. By taking care of your skin everyday, not only will you look and feel younger, it will help you take a break and recharge your busy life. We at DKM Skincare, do not like premature aging, and we are sure you agree that no one likes looking old. So, take a break, choose a facial that is right for you, leave stress behind and reeeeelax.

The teenage years are some of the most memorable times of our lives. There is the challenge of obtaining a driver’s license, going on your first date, attending your high school prom and applying to colleges. While these years hold some unforgettable moments, they can also be very stressful and downright mean! So the last thing a teenager wants to worry about is the nightmare of having pimples, zits, or being called crater face! This is no-doubt a very nerve-racking time.
The majority of teenagers suffer from acne in one form or the other – from mild to severe. Not only can acne be embarrassing to teens, but it may also lead to deeper emotional problems. Teenagers may suffer from depression, anxiety, and a lack of self-confidence. During the adolescent years, bodies are changing and there is a roller coaster of emotions that comes with the territory. Hormonal changes are one of the most common culprits for causing acne – as we well know, it rages in every teenager.
Androgen, which is a sex hormone active during puberty, stimulates the secretion of the skin’s natural oil. When the oil secretion is mixed with bacteria, it clogs the follicle, which causes the oil and bacteria to get trapped inside the skin – this ultimately results in acne.
Teens are especially vulnerable since their bodies are rapidly changing. Getting acne during this sensitive time in life can put a damper on many social situations. Self-confidence is extremely important to accomplishing your hopes and dreams. The last thing teens want to stand in their way is having acne.
Unfortunately, getting acne is often a part of growing up. Teens can take charge of their skincare early and help keep acne under control. There are good reasons for taking care of your skin at a young age. It is more than just outward appearances; it also affects your emotional health. DKM Skincare is all about promoting healthy skincare regimens and we welcome your questions or comments about any skincare condition including acne.

DKM Skincare offers a simple, effective way to get rid of your brown spots, age spots and broken capillaries!
This treatment is called IPL or better known as Photo-Rejuventation or Photo-Facials. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) helps to improve the appearance of sun damaged skin, removes age spots, most benign brown spots, redness due to broken capillaries, rosacea and sun damage.
Photo-Rejuvenation restores your skin to a youthful appearance with no down time! This treament is ideal for anyone with a busy lifestyle, because it only requires minimal recovery time.
IPL treats the following skin conditions:

• Dark Eye Circles
• Flushing
• Redness
• Skin Texture
• Sun Damage
• Sun-Induced Freckles Anywhere On The Body
• Age Spots
• Brown Spots
• Broken Capillaries

IPL also helps to reduce fine lines and large pores.
So how does IPL work? Well during the actual treatment, the pulsed light energy is precisely absorbed by the target areas, without damaging the healthy skin. Selectively heating and closing off blood vessels, IPL reduces the lesions while sparing nearby tissue from injury.
Schedule a consultation with Dr. Mosley-Mendez to determine if IPL is right for you. Our clients report little to no pain and usually return to their normal activities immediately.
Call us today at (305) 557-0414 to make your consultation appointment or to ask about our IPL treatments!

It’s important to note that BOTOX® and Juvéderm® works in different ways to reduce the signs of aging. BOTOX® is used to block the transmission of nerve impulses to the injected muscles to reduce the activity of those muscles. This is especially useful for those frown lines that form between the brows, and the fine lines around the eyes. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment for people 18 to 65 years of age. During the treatment, Dr. Kellie Mosley will administer very low doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic by a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause stubborn lines. The treatment usually takes about 10 minutes, and no down time is required. This treatment may cause little to no discomfort, and you always have the option of numbing the areas before being treated. Within 1-2 weeks, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months. Results may vary.

Juvéderm® is a filler. These fillers do just what their name implies; they fill in and plump out any fine line in the face with a substance called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in all mammals that helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. Juvéderm® is actually the only hyaluronic acid filler with FDA approval to last up to one year. During your Juvederm treatment, Dr. Kellie Mosley will ease Juvéderm® injectable gel into the skin using a fine needle to temporarily fill in and augment the treatment area and smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds) and “marionette lines” (oral commissures). Juvéderm® temporarily adds volume to the skin and may give the appearance of a smoother surface. This treatment usually takes about 15 minutes, and may cause some discomfort during and after the injection. You do have an option of numbing the area to be treated before the injection is administered. Results may vary, so schedule a consultation with Dr. Kellie Mosley to find out what treatment will work best for you.

People are often confused with what type of skin they have. It is very important to understand your skin, and to get a professional analysis of your skin. This way you can choose products and services that are ideal for your particular skin.

Oily skin can sometimes be hereditary- if your mom or dad had oily skin, you have a chance of getting oily skin as well. Hormones also play a part. Our skin has glands that produce oil. The production of this oil is stimulated by changes in your hormones, or by hormone production. This said anything that increases or decreases hormones can cause the skin to produce more oil. For men and women alike any physical or emotional stress can start this process. For women especially, hormone changes occur not only during puberty, but during our menstrual cycle, during pregnancy, and also per menopause. These hormone changes in women can lead to not only oily skin, but also hormonal acne.

The good news is that whatever the cause of your oily skin, there are protocols you can use to control the oil!

Proper cleansing is the first step to prep your skin. This leaves the skin free from excess oil, but also leaves a barrier of fatty acid called our acid mantel. Think of this barrier as a sealant to our pores that doesn’t let moisture leave, but also protects our skin from bacteria. Be careful when using cleansers with active ingredients such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or any scrubs. These products are meant to be used sparingly. Remember that oil production is a natural response to irritation, so if your cleanser is too strong, if you are washing too much, the more likely you will produce oil. This is especially true of soap meant for the body. This soap is designed to be harsher to get rid of oils and dirt from the body; however on the face it can strip your skin of this essential barrier.

Toners are also very helpful at controlling oil on the skin. They seal the skin by producing a PH that will not allow bacteria to grow, but also uses ingredients meant to control excess oils. Glycolic and salicylic acids are ingredients that can help in controlling this oil because they exfoliate dead skin cells, and eat away at build up in the pores. The combination of these two acids is usually very effective. Make sure you are using a broad spectrum sunscreen of at least 25 when applying products with acids on the skin.

Retinols are also a great way to exfoliate dead layers of the skin. How does retinol work? Retinol has a small enough molecule to penetrate into the skin. Once in the skin, it repairs and stimulates collagen and elastin to create a firmer, smoother skin. Retinol also works to speed cell turnover and exfoliation by stimulating healthy cell production. Getting rid of this dead skin allows healthier skin to appear. The result is softer skin, smaller pores and even skin tone, and most importantly helps control oil and blemishes. You would use a retinol product at night, after cleansing.

Masques made with clay or mud can also be helpful at pulling oil out of the skin. However; these mask treatments should only be used no more than once a week. Some masks have ingredients that can be used as a spot treatment. If using a mask with active ingredients, use sparingly to the affected areas, and use as often as necessary only to the affected areas.

If you have any questions about any of the steps described above, or are not sure of your skin type, please feel free to call us at DKM Skincare (305) 557-0414.

The search for a non-invasive treatment that actually gives dramatic results ends here. The newest laser for anti-aging and sun-damage is called the Pixel laser. Until recently there were only two different categories of laser treatments; ablative and non-ablative.
Ablative laser treatments are the most aggressive but also give the best results. Your risk of scarring, and hyperpigmentation are increased and there is a longer healing time in between treatments. Non-ablative lasers are less aggressive and require more frequent treatments to get the desired result. Non-ablative lasers are also considered low risk treatments. The Pixel is the new frontier in laser therapy. It is the perfect blend of aggressive therapy with minimal recovery time. It gives better results than the non-ablative, with out the down time of the aggressive ablative.

The pixel laser works by making microscopic wounds on the skin, causing the body to start actively healing these wounds. The healing process stimulates collagen to form in the skin. The result is the smoothening of wrinkles, and even skin tone. Because the pixel works by making small wounds, the recovery time is shorter, and results are similar to that of the ablative lasers. The side effects of the pixel treatment can include minor swelling that can last one to two days, and redness lasting a little longer. Scabbing and peeling can last up to seven days, and is easily covered up with moisturizer, and mineral makeup. As with any laser therapy, there is always a risk of infection and scarring, but with this new laser technology the risks are minimized.

With the pixel laser, treatments are spread out every four to six weeks, and usually require a minimum of three treatments. You may require more or less treatments depending on the area, and the severity of the skin. The final result will be a fresher, newer, better skin. A typical full face treatment can lasts about 30 minutes to and hour. Pixel however can be performed practically anywhere on the body. If you are interested in finding out more about Pixel laser, or any of our other laser therapies, please feel free to contact DKM Skincare. Dr. Kellie Mosley-Mendez is highly trained in different laser treatments, and can get you on the path to beautiful skin!
